Marine Litter: Challenges, Impacts and Shared Solutions
PUGLIA REGION | BLUECIRCLE Project – Interreg VI-B IPA Adrion

Bari, 5 February 2026 – from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 pm
Conference Room, 5th Floor
Puglia Region Headquarters, Via Gentile 52, Bari

Marine litter represents one of the major environmental challenges at a global level, with significant impacts on marine ecosystems, biodiversity, water quality, and coastal economies.

The complexity of this phenomenon requires an integrated approach based on effective public policies, solid scientific foundations, technological innovation, and the active involvement of local communities and stakeholders.

The event “Marine Litter: Challenges, Impacts and Shared Solutions”, scheduled for 5 February 2026 from 9:30 a.m. at the Conference Room (5th floor) of the Puglia Region headquarters in Bari, is conceived as an institutional and technical forum aimed at exploring marine litter pollution affecting seas and beaches, while highlighting strategies, tools, and operational solutions that are already being tested or implemented.

Through institutional contributions, scientific analyses, technological innovation case studies, and territorial best practices, the workshop seeks to strengthen a shared vision grounded in collective responsibility and cooperation between public and private actors. The objective is to address marine litter in an innovative way, transforming an environmental challenge into an opportunity for sustainable development and circular economy.

The meeting brings together representatives from institutions, the research community, public utilities, environmental associations, and the cooperative sector, fostering structured dialogue focused on knowledge sharing and the definition of concrete and replicable actions.

The initiative is promoted by Puglia Region, acting as Lead Partner of the BLUECIRCLE project (Boosting Circular Economy Solutions for Marine Litter Collection and Recycling in the Adriatic-Ionian Regions), funded under the Interreg VI-B IPA ADRION Programme 2021–2027, involving partners from Italy, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Greece, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The main objective of the initiative is to contribute to the development of replicable and sustainable marine litter management models capable of integrating environmental protection, technological innovation, and territorial cooperation at a macro-regional level.

In particular, the project aims to assess the technical feasibility of an integrated system that, through a mobile facility, enables the collection and treatment of marine litter directly on beaches across the Adriatic-Ionian area. The facility will allow the separation of different materials found in marine litter, promoting recycling and reintegration into new production chains, while reducing reliance on landfill disposal.
